Blog Prompt #5 (October 25 @ 11:59pm)

Your fifth blog post is essentially the “topic” portion of your Research Proposal. What topic will your final Researched Argument discuss? Why are you interested in that topic? What about Forked made you think about that topic? What is your research question? What is your preliminary arguable thesis sentence? What are you going to argue?

In my research proposal, I will be discussing the topic of raising the minimum wage for tipped workers in Pennsylvania. I chose this topic I have experience in the restaurant industry. More specifically, I have experience in my hometown. I also have friends that work as waitresses and I was able to view their pay stubs. What I saw was disgusting. Most of her paychecks were $0.00, with the occasional $1.51. But what happens to their hourly pay? Almost all of it goes towards taxes. Most waitresses get paid the bare minimum and rely on tips in order to pay bills, provide for the children, etc. In Saru Jayaraman’s informative text, Forked, the topic of livable wages for restaurant employees is mentioned multiple times. My research question is, “Should Pennsylvania raise their minimum wage for tipped workers?” I am going to argue that Pennsylvania should raise their minimum wage for tipped workers in order to provide livable wages for their employees.

I will be talking about race and gender discrimination in the food and beverage industry. Race and gender discrimination is discussed by Saru Jayaraman in chapter 4 of Forked when she describes fine dining restaurants, where the battle of tipping and the lower minimum wage for tipped workers is exacerbated by severe race and gender segregation and discrimination. I want to talk about this topic because the first time I worked on a restaurant I got to experience race discrimination against a Mexican person. My research question is, “How can we reduce severe race and gender discrimination in the food and beverage industry?” My preliminary thesis is, “Restaurant business owners should require each of their employees to attend diversity monthly classes before they start working in their restaurant in order to promote diversity and avoid discrimination.” I am going to argue that business owners should implement diversity courses to have a better environment on the workplace.

The topic that I will discussing is whether San Jose should raise the wage and take away tipping. What mainly interested me in this topic was a friend who works at the restaurant and complains about how much they make. The person claims that sometimes tips are not what they should be, and the wage is too low to be working all day and not getting enough. What interested me in the topic was when Jayaraman identifies Mexican Restaurant as one of her discussion and how she elaborates talks about what Mexican food and restaurants and what they are characterized by. My research question is “Should San Jose take away tipping policy and increase their pay wage?” The preliminary arguable thesis, San Jose should take away their tipping policy and increase their pay wage. I am going to argue that waiters need to get paid more in order to have a better economic status.

In my research paper I will be talking about tipped workers getting paid more in South Carolina. This is a huge interest to me because I am a waitress and there are many reasons why we should be getting paid more than $2.17 an hour. My question is “Should tipped workers be paid more and also get tips?” I will be arguing that waiters/waitresses should be getting paid more while getting tips and the reasons behind it. My thesis is “Tipped workers should be paid more because the money they make now is not enough money to live off of and to go to school with”

In my research proposal I will propose raising the minimum wage for tipped workers at Old Mcdonald Fish Camp. After working with these tipped workers and hearing about their $2.13 pay from our employers, I realized these servers do not receive any form of pay from the Fish Camp. All of their pay comes from the customers. Therefore, who do these people really working for Old Mcdonald’s Fish Camp or their customers? Forked made me think about this topic from Saru Jayaraman’s interviews with other tipped workers experiencing the same issues. My preliminary arguable thesis is “Old Mcdonald’s Fish Camp should raise the minimum wage for their tipped workers.” I am going to argue that they could have taxes taken out of their tips each night to counteract his argument of them making “enough money”. By taking these taxes out each night they would take home less, also they would not owe as much when they do their taxes each year.

in my research proposal I have chosen “sexual harassment in restaurant industry” as my topic for the research paper. After reading about sexual harassment in the book “Forked” I came to know that this topic is very vast. In the book, the author explained sexual harassment and its relationship with gender and race. In today’s world, where we talk about gender and racial equality, these problems still exists in our society on a very large scale. A lot of laws are made for these kind of issues but still these problems are penetrating in the roots of our societies. So we still have to discuss about it and we’ve to find some solutions for these issues. The author also explained some cases with statistics. I believe this topic is worth to talk about.
There are many ways through which we can reduce the sexual harassment cases. As I mentioned before, this topic is very vast so I narrowed it down to “can we reduce the sexual harassment cases in the restaurant sector by eliminating gender-wage gap and increasing wages of female employees?” Under this topic, I’m going to argue that increasing the wages of female employees can really reduce the sexual harassment rate or not. If yes, I am going to provide the statistics from different sources. If it’s not like that, what are the problems related to it.

In my final research I will be discussing the topic of tipping in the food and beverage industry more specifically in Berkman’s Place at the Augusta Nationals. Throughout Saru Jayaraman’s Forked, she talks about how some places want to remove tips all together and how some places encourage people not to tip. I have personal experiences when it comes to working in the restaurant industry and being one of the employees that didn’t receive tips. When you’re not receiving tips and don’t have a very high wage most of what you’re making goes to taxes. Plus in bigger restaurant where only servers are receiving the tips and they don’t tip share with their food runners and busters it makes it more difficult to make a salary. My research question is, “Should Berkman’s allow for guest to tip and how should they handle tip sharing?”  My preliminary thesis sentence is, ”Berkman’s should require a tip sharing policy to insecure that all employees are treated equally in the restaurant and there is less of a conflict in the restaurant and no major problems occur.” While writing this research proposal I will be arguing that Berkman’s should allow for guest to tip and apply a method for tip sharing equally. This way all the employees will be treated more fairly.

In my research proposal, I will be discussing the topic of raising the minimum wage for tipped workers delivery drivers in Columbia, SC. I chose this topic I have experience in the restaurant industry, before I came to college, I worked at Panera Bread. This business recently started doing delivery and they make $4/hr plus tips. Most of their checks went towards taxes. These delivery drivers do more than just deliver the food, they also clean, restock, even prepare more house made beverages. In Saru Jayaraman’s informative text, Forked, the topic of livable wages for restaurant employees is mentioned multiple times. My research question is, “Should Panera Bread raise their minimum wage for delievery drivers?” I am going to argue that Panera Bread should raise their minimum wage for their delivery drivers so that they can receive the proper wages that they worked for.

Most workers within the restaurant industry are tipped workers, meaning that part of their wages is made up from tips. Tips aren’t always a given from certain people and these workers are forced to go to great lengths to ensure that the customers they serve are happy and get the best tip possible. Owners use tipping as an excuse not to pay these workers the minimum wage and instead have a separate category for them. These people shouldn’t be reliant on an incentive like that for their pay checks. Tipped workers should be paid the same amount as non-tipped workers. Doing this will not only provide them with a wage that they can live off of, but a bonus for each customer that they serve. The tip no longer becomes an essential thing the tipped worker needs and can become themselves around the customers they are serving.

For my research proposal, I have chose to talk about minimum wage of tipped workers in the restaurant industry. I am interested in this topic because I have a strong opinion that minimum wage needs to be set higher. Forked helped me realize how much struggle people that work in the restaurant industry go through just because they aren’t being paid enough to get by. So far I think my research question is going to be something like, “Should tipped workers in the restaurant industry have their minimum wage set higher?, I might add on to this research question in the future as I continue to do research. My thesis will more than likely be, “Making little money is better than making none at all, but I believe jobs should make working worth it and have the minimum wage be raised.

In my research proposal, I will be discussing raising the minimum wage for tipped workers in South Carolina. I am interested in this topic because a lot of the waiters and waitresses, specifically in my hometown of Orangeburg, appear to be older adults trying to make ends meet to support their families. Chapter two of forked talked a lot about tipping and the different wage amounts and policies associated with it. It made me interested in what could be done to positively change tipping. My research question is, “How will changing the minimum wage for tipped workers in South Carolina affect the employees?” My arguable thesis sentence would be, “Changing the minimum wage for tipped workers in South Carolina would allow them to live more comfortably and have reassurance of constant stability.” I am going to argue that South Carolina should raise the minimum wage for tipped workers to provide stability, comfortability, and livable wages for their employees.

My topic is sexual harassment in the food and restaurant industry. I am interested in this topic because it is somewhat of a controversial issue these days and I feel quite passionate about it. There is a part of the introduction and a chapter in Forked that discusses the issues of sexual harassment and assault in the food and beverage industry that brought my attention to just how serious it is in this area of the workforce. The equation I’m answering is “how can we eliminate sexual harassment in the food and beverage industry?” and my thesis suggests that corporate policies change and restaurants require their employees to sign a contract discussing specific consequences that would take place if they were commit an act of sexual harassment. It was suggested to me that I pick a certain restaurant to discuss their policies and how putting these policies in place would change the way the restaurant is now.

Your fifth blog post is essentially the “topic” portion of your Research Proposal. What topic will your final Researched Argument discuss? Why are you interested in that topic? What about Forked made you think about that topic? What is your research question? What is your preliminary arguable thesis sentence? What are you going to argue?
I will be researching a mix of raising the minimum wage as well as getting rid of tips at The River Club. I feel that giving restaurant workers a “normal” hourly pay, despite the cons, is necessary. Also, workers pay should not be based on performance. Therefore, tipping should be nonexistent.  I find interest in the topic as it is a constant issue in this specific industry. While workers find tipping great on a busy day, they have a change of mind on the slow days. In my opinion, the pay should not be based on traffic nor performance. Honestly, Forked covers these topics in the entirety of the book. My research question is should restaurant workers be paid more by the hour and lose tips? My argument is that restaurant workers should be paid a set hourly wage without tipping.

My topic will be on whether companies should implement programs and benefits to help their low-income employees. This topic interested me because I saw a common theme in the book: poverty or close to poverty. How could they be so poor but yet they have a job? I blamed this on the companies they are employed to. They know that their employees are struggling to make ends meet and what are they doing about it? Little to nothing.  Chapter five in Forked really peaked my interest because that was when Jayaraman told us the story of Guadeloupe and how she wasn’t compensated for the hours she worked, so technically the store was “stealing” from her. My research question will be something along the lines of “Should companies implement programs, benefits, or bonuses to establish a stable income for their employees and improve their financial status?”. My thesis sentence will answer my question, suggest ways on how this will benefit, not just the employees, but everyone, and prepare a budget for such programs. I will argue that companies need to take responsibility of helping their low-income employees instead of just being spectators and watching them struggle.

My research question is, ‘How would eliminating tips in South Carolina affect employees work-ethic and drive to provide their best service?’. I will be analyzing and arguing that tips should not be eliminated because they encourage servers to give their best to the job. My research topic connects to the book Forked because the possibility of eliminating tips is mentioned many times among the text. At the same time this topic interest me because I am a large advocate for tipping. As a costumer I enjoy being able to personally show my gratitude to someone who has been serving me.

My topic for the Research Proposal is why should restaurants provide employees with paid sick days. This perticular topic caught my eye because, it made me realize that it’s not right for workers to have to come to work not feeling well, and being very sick, because that causes them not to work 100% that day and it’s also a health caution. Your germs can spread to other employees, to the food and to the customers.  My research question is why aren’t employees, who are working at fast food restaurants, not being allowed paid sick days.

In my research, I will be talking about minimum wage of tipped workers in South Carolina. I am interested in this topic because where I am from, most of the waiters/waitresses make money off of tipping and these workers are more than likely older adults. I feel like this is an important topic because these workers should be paid more than what they are getting. In Forked, Chapter two talked about the minimum wage differences and how it was such a struggle. My research question is, ” Should South Carolina increase their minimum wage for tipped workers.” My arguable thesis statement is ” Raising the minimum wage in South Carolina will help stimulate the economy well beings.”  I am going to argue that tipped workers should be paid the same amount as the others.

As discussed in Forked, I would like to base my research topic on sexual harassment experienced in fast food restaurants. I want to specifically speak on a personal experiences I had with a co-worker and a couple of customers. My argument will be surrounding how could my place of work help me or train me to deal with sexual harassment? I will be researching statics, how has this issue been addressed in the past and other’s story of sexual harassment.

In my research paper, I will talking about how waitress should get paid more , it interest me because when i go to restaurants sometimes i feel bad for the waitress because some customers don’t tip good waitress at times. The topic of my research paper is Sexual Harassment. I chose this topic from forked because there was such a high percentage of sexual harassment in the food industry. My research question is how to decrease the rate of sexual harassment. My thesis sentence will be along the line of ” Companies should make all employees take training in sexual harassment and implement punishment for those sexually harassing others. I will be arguing the benefits of taking the training courses and how punishment can decrease the sexual harassment rate.

Topic: Racial Discrimination in the restaurant industry.
Racial differences in the restaurant industry have become a universal phenomenon. Issues of racial discrimination force us to reject the distributive pattern to develop a conception of contributive justice. Sources of racial discrimination are often rooted in particular historical and social contexts and are shaped by institutional structures and practices. Seeking to change individual perspectives without dealing with these influences, or without engaging the specific issues that shape this paradigm is futile. Like the segregated buses of the Jim Crow South, the restaurant industry has reserved the best jobs in the front lines for Caucasians, while minority races such as African Americans and Latinos are relegated to the back. Both restaurant workers and employers admit that this stark divide along color lines is commonly accepted industry practice, based on notions of skills, table manners, language ability, and appearance. As a result of the legal framework that demands proof of discriminatory intent, this obvious form of segregation has existed mostly unchallenged until recently. After reading “chapter 3” of Forked: A new Standard of American Dining, I became aware of the racial disparities that plague society. Activists and black empowerment advocates fought for our freedom and marched to raise awareness of racial injustices. Our responsibility as part of the minorities is to ‘carry the baton’ toward the obliteration of racial discrimination.

    Research Question/Thesis:

Question: How can we eradicate racial prejudice at Denny’s Restaurants?

Thesis: Denny’s Restaurants should create an equal environment inclusive of minority races by educating staff on the importance of equality and stigmatization.

For my research proposal, I will discuss the topic of raising the minimum wage for tipped workers.  This is an interest for me because of a lot of waitresses dont’t get treated the right way by the customers and they only get paid $2.13 an hour as their minimum wage.  For the workers that have that low of a minimum wage have to almost completely rely on their tips from the customers, which is not always the best tip.  Saru Jayaraman talks about the minimum wage for tipped workers in her book, Forked multiple times.  My research question is “Should tip workers get a higher minimum wage?”  My thesis statement is “Tipped workers should get a better minimum wage because the minimum wage now is not enough for their cost of living.”  I am going to argue that the tipped workers minimum wage needs to rais for them to be able to not just rely on their tips to pay their bills.

The topic I have decided to argue for is about requiring certain classes for working at restaurants in order to understand how things work, and also about raising the wage to $15/hr for restaurant workers and $10/hr for fast-food workers. My experience in working as a waitress at Mi Rancho has made me conclude that tips alone will not be enough to pay bills or house expenses, especially for people working to take care of their family and kids. To see all the mistreatment workers have to deal and put up with just to keep the job and make enough tips. I feel that with a good basic understanding of the food industry with classes that can be implemented and a good pay it can benefit both employee and employer making it a win-win for both. One of Jayaraman’s  arguments were to fight for a raise in wage and eliminate once and for all the frozen wage gap of $2.15 and have a better and fair wage for the employee. Many restaurants throughout the book show this and even places like, Chipotle have incorporated a system of mangerial where one can work on improving and even getting promotions for their hard work. Should employers incorporate classes into their employees to have skilled employees while also providing a fair livable wage for their employees?

In my research paper, I will be discussing the topic of sexual harassment in the restaurant industry. I am interested in this issue because it is something that I did not realize was such a problem in the restaurant industry. In addition to that, I feel very strongly against it as I believe that women should be treated with respect and that they should not have to expose themselves in their place of work just to try and make a livable salary. Forked has influenced this decision because of the personal experiences of women in the novel that were talked about. My research question that I am going to use to drive this paper is, “What ways can be used to eliminate sexual harassment in the restaurant industry.” My arguable thesis for this paper is “Workers in the restaurant industry should have to take a sexual harassment class prior to beginning work with the company.” An argument that could be used is that workers already have knowledge of sexual harassment and how to treat co-workers and should not have to take a class prior to working for the company.

The topic I’m interested in doing is Starting a Business. This specific topic is mentioned in every chapter, but I imagined it wouldn’t be one people thought about when choosing an idea. Due to this, I wanted to do something different and interesting, which I deem so. Reading Forked starting a business seem easy, yet I figured it wasn’t. Because we aren’t specifically told of the hardships the restaurant owners face, I wanted to do my own research into it. My research question is “How do entrepreneurs make their business more appealing than other already influential business’ in that field?” I aim to make my thesis statement be “Through excellent customer service, intriguing promotion and competitive pricing, entrepreneurs can hope to attract more publicity to their business than their competitors.” Throughout my paper I want to write about tactics available and how to equip those to a starting business attempting to grow.

My topic in my final research argument will discuss the affects of the tipping system on servers at Red Bowl and how improving the system can benefit their lives. I am interested in this topic because I have a friend who serves at Red Bowl and, since I also work in the food industry, it would be comforting to know that everyone is being treated equally. The many different sections in Forked that contained real life stories from people who were struggling to make it by on mainly tips made me think about this topic. My research question is “How can the system of tipping be improved to benefit servers more?”. My preliminary thesis is “Red Bowl can improve the lives of their servers by getting rid of tipping and replacing it with a fixed wage because evidence suggests that this can lead to less opportunities for sexual harrasment, servers with more reliable wages, and will eliminate pay discrimination”. I am going to argue that tipping is harmful to servers in areas of harrasment, financial stability, and discrimination and that it can be replaced by a fixed livable wage.

I will gladly be discussing why the minimum wage shouldn’t be raised. Being someone that has done bookkeeping before and is the daughter of a business owner, this topic has a special place in my heart. I think this topic will always be a debate among really any kind of person which makes it an even more important issue. Forked on many occasions discusses the minimum wage of tipped workers and workers wages being “too low”. Reading these kinds of things in the book made me recall experiences I’ve had. I’ve worked in the service industry and have had the opportunity to get a “behind the scenes” look at the numbers and other unknown areas of a business that help put minimum wage into perspective. I wouldn’t say I know everything about this topic and because of that, I must ask myself these questions: Why should minimum wage be raised? If minimum wage is raised, would our economy be affected? If so, how? For most of the essay, I would have to refute pro arguments and then state my argument.

My topic for the research argument is how tipped workers minimum wage should be eliminated. This would ensure a more steady income and economic stability for these workers in the restaurant industry. Tipped employees receive as low as $2.13 per hour which is then paid back to the government in the form of taxes. Tipped workers who are paid the minimum wage must rely on tips as their income. This leads to an unsteady income flow which causes problems for workers who must pay bills and/or feed their families. I am interested in this topic because after reading about the personal lives of workers in the restaurant industry, I was intrigued and disappointed to what I have learned. In order to make things more fair, minimum wage should be the same for all tipped and non-tipped workers. My research question is, “How can we stabilize income for workers in the restaurant industry?” My preliminary thesis is, “Minimum wage for tipped workers should be equal to the non-tipped workers wage to ensure income stability and peace of mind for workers in the restaurant industry”.

For my research proposal, I am going to discuss the topic of minimum wages for tipped workers in South Carolina. The topic sparked my interest because it stirs up the longtime debate on increasing the minimum wage for tipped workers. In Jayaraman’s book, Forked, she discusses the main key issues in the dining industry, which expanded my knowledge on how tipped workers struggle living off tips and getting the bare minimum wage. As for my research question, my question is “should the state of South Carolina increase the minimum wage for tipped workers and not depend their paychecks on the tips they receive?” Hence, I am going to argue that the state of South Carolina should increase the minimum wage for tipped workers, whereas tips should serve as a reward for their dutiful service and not a basis of their paychecks.

The topic I decided to research for my final Researched Argument is raising the minimum wage of tipped workers in South Carolina. Although I have never worked in the restaurant industry, I know many people who have experienced it in one way or another. I am interested in this topic because I have friends who have struggled with their wages from restaurants for years.  I want to research what the possible affects of raising the minimum wage of tipped workers might do for not only restaurant employees, but businesses as well. In chapter 2 of Forked, Saru Jayaraman discusses unfair wages and wage discrimination. The real life stories she told were what intrigued me in the first place. They made me want to research why businesses don’t respect their workers enough to pay them livable wages. My research question would be, “How would raising the minimum wage of restaurant workers affect the employees and the businesses?” My preliminary arguable thesis sentence will be “South Carolina should increase the minimum wage of tipped restaurant workers  to enhance the business and the lives of the workers”. I will argue that the minimum wage of restaurant workers need to be increased to create a better business and work experience for the workers.

In my research, I will be talking about how minimum wages for non-tipped workers in New York should be raised.  I am interested in this because as Forkedhas mentioned, some people who get paid minimum wage cannot make a living off of it.  Some of the people that were mentioned in Forked has a family to support or either they are in school and living on their own, away from family, and they are having a hard time supporting themselves and or their family because they are only getting paid the minimum wage.  New York is a pretty expensive place to live at and $9.70 an hour for a general minimum wage is not enough to make a living. Not everyone was meant to live a luxury lifestyle but $9.70 and hour is not a lot of money after taxes and bills to pay.  You also have to buy necessities for yourself and your family.  My research question is, “Should New York raise the general minimum wage for non-tipped workers?”  I am going to argue that New York should raise their general minimum wages, so employees can make a living off of it.

My topic for the research is the minimum for tipped workers. I’m interested in this topic because in Forked many of the problems in the industry are related to the wages that employees earn. While the minimum wage is still low, the bigger problem is that tipped workers can earn no money for hours of work. My research question is “Should South Carolina raise the minimum wage for tipped workers?” Im going to argue that they should raise it for tipped workers.

For my research argument I will be discussing the potential for cyber attacking involving wireless networks of restaurants. I am interested in this topic because I am studying cyber security, and this is a very up and coming topic that is a very pressing matter. The part in Forked that made me think about this topic is, where Jayaraman mentioned the percentage in which people eat at restaurants. It’s something we do something much and we don’t even think about the security of those restaurants. My research question is. “How can the wireless security for restaurants be improved?” I will argue that the wireless infrastructure of restaurants needs to improve in order to prevent cyber attacks ad keep our data safe.

For my research proposal, I am going to be talking about minimum wage. My girlfriend is a waitress at my dad’s restaurant and she always notices that the cooks are lazy and don’t ever do anything. The cooks get paid $8.50 an hour and the waitresses get paid $7.50 an hour. I think there should be a policy rule about breaks and slacking off. I am going to be arguing about is how dramatically  waitresses and cooks minimum wage can decrease over time if proper standards have not been met.

the topic i’m interested in is minimum wage and the effects it has on the economy outside of the restaurants. I have worked at a restaurant for around a year now and most of the servers get paid well and don’t really need any extra money, most tipped workers in darden restaurant chains get paid reasonably. My research question is ” why shouldn’t the minimum wage in the united states be raised?”. My argument sentence is ” The minimum wage for tipped workers should not be raised. The tables in forked got me interested in this because they showed how little the people at most of the restaurants get paid, this peeked my interest because the people I know get paid pretty well at every restaurant i have worked at.

My topic for my final Research Argument that I will discuss is how to reduce sexual harassment in the restaurant industry, specifically Waffle House. I will pretend that I am writing it to Waffle House corporate to make it seem more effective. I am interested in this topic because I have prior experience at Waffle House and I understand how hard it is. In Forked I read a lot on sexual harassment and I think those numbers are way too high. Not that they should exist at all but you know what I’m saying. My research question is going to be, What precautions should Waffle House take in order to reduce the amount of sexual harassment toward waitresses? My preliminary arguable thesis sentence is that because waitresses are paid so poorly they must resort to using their body as a means of getting tips. I’m going to argue that increasing a Waffle House waitresses’ wage would decrease sexual harassment towards them.

My topic for the research argument will be about raising the national minimum wage for tipped workers.  When reading Forked it talked about how that since for most states the minimum wage is so low that most tipped workers have to rely on tips for their income.  This means different shifts will bring in different amount of customers. Also the women put up with the sexual harassment so they can get a good tip and that’s just not right. My Preliminary thesis sentence is that the minimum wage should be increased for tipped workers because tips can fluctuate between: day of the week, hour, season, and shift, it would almost eliminate sexual harassment, and would lower the poverty rate. I’m going to argue that the national minimum wage should be raised for tipped workers.

I chose to write about sexual harassment in the food and beverage industry and how it can be reduced because not only have I had a personal experience, but this is something that really interest me. This topic interest me so much because it deals with helping people and that’s something I love to do. My research question will be, “How can we reduce instances of sexual harassment in the food and beverage industry?” To reduce sexual harassment in the food and beverage industry, there would have to be more detailed laws put in place, so customers aren’t allowed to touch or make sexual comments. This will also reduce law suits put against these restaurants that experience these types of encounters.

My research topic will be on why the federal minimum wage of non-tipped workers in South Carolina should be increased. I find this topic interesting because the only two states I’ve worked in were South Carolina and Georgia where they have similar federal minimum wages of $7.25 and as a worker who has only receive this, I can strongly relate to others who are placed in this exact situation and may have no other option. I personally feel it”s time for a change which makes me more passionate about the topic and “Forked” shares personal experience that also appeal to the topic I’ll be arguing. My research question is “Why should the federal minimum wage of non-tipped workers in South Carolina be increased?” My thesis will consist of the most vital reasons as to why the federal minimum wage of non-tipped workers in South Carolina needs to be increased and these will be my reasons of research and citations to “Forked”.

Okay so I had my topic already finished, but I forgot about this blog post. I will be talking about South Carolina raising their minimum wage or either abiding by the fair wage act. Within the fair wage act any employee that works over 40 hours should be given healthcare. In order to get around that South Carolina has decided to cut down employees hours to make sure they don’t reach 40 hours so they aren’t required to provide benefits. I feel that if they want to take away employee benefits they should give employees an fair chance at earning more money by raising the minimum wage.

My research topic will be on racism in the restaurant industry and how it effects everyone involved. Primarily with lower end restaurants being the ones in question. Throughout Forked, there have been many cases of racism in lower end restaurants, one such example is Horacio. My thesis sentence will be “Racism is bad for a restaurant because it hurts all parties involved. To reduce the amount of racism in the industry a few steps can be followed. One of these being that all workers, colored or otherwise, be given the same pay, opportunities, and respect as everyone else.

In my research proposal, I’m still undecided on which topic I want to research. I am torn between researching sexual harassment that occurs in the food and beverage industry, or completely getting rid of tips. These two topics both have a lot of details to back up the argument.  I haven’t had a job in the restaurant industry before, so doing either one of these topics will give me an incite on the difficulties in this business. Since I’m having so much trouble with choosing a topic I might start with the sexual harassment topic and put a spin on it with ridding the industry of tipping so these workers don’t have to be sexualized to make a living.

My reserch project will be on Immigrant status in the food and beverage industry. I will be talking about how immigrants doesn’t get a great pay or benefits like other workers. Through the book forked it gave many examples about these problems and I think they should have a chane to get the same rights as American workers.

What topic will your final Researched Argument discuss? Why are you interested in that topic? What about Forked made you think about that topic? What is your research question? What is your preliminary arguable thesis sentence? What are you going to argue?

My research project will be on the minimum wage pay of servers in the restaurant industry. I am interested in this topic, because I once thought about joining the restaurant industry as a server. My thesis will be “Servers are not paid as must as they should be. because a big part of going out to eat is the server. The server greets you, takes your order, deals with your entitled ‘the customer is always right attitude’ and cleans your table all with a smile. They are forced to act as if they are robots without feelings for tips that help them pay their bills.” I will be arguing about why servers deserve a higher salary.

The topic I am going to be talking about in my research proposal is racial discrimination. I am interested in this topic because it is very known in the world today and you always hear people talking about how they are getting treated because of there color. The thing that made me think about this was when Mrs. Jayaraman was telling us about how some people get treated different because of the way they look. My research question is going to be, what can you change or do in the restaurant business to decrease racial discrimination. my preliminary arguable thesis statement is going to say although we see racial discrimination in the restaurant business people is going to get doing it if nobody is stopping them. I am going to argue that some people don’t see racial discrimination as problem and its causing us to live in a very messed up world.

The topic I will be discussing is why I feel we need to raise the minimum wage. My thesis statement is the minimum wage in there United States should be raised to help provide the American workers in the food and beverage industry livable wages for not only them but there families also.  The reason I want to do this topic is because after reading the book Forked I learned just how hard it is to fight for your tips to keep you and your family alive and to feed them for that week. I will also add in there how I feel that with tips it gives leverage to the customer to perhaps make the worker do things they wouldn’t otherwise do. This topic just tome us very serious and affects the world around us and out fellow humans.

In my research proposal, I will be discussing why the federal minimum wage should not be raised from $7.25. I chose this because I find the economy to be interesting. I will be arguing that the food and beverage industries are not made to be the sole provider for income. My thesis is “The federal minimum wage should not be raised because it will negatively impact the economy in the US”

My research proposal is to discuss why the federal minimum wage for tipped workers should be raised in South Carolina.  They don’t earn much to begin with, and relying on tips is unfair for them.  I’ll be arguing that they are overstressed and aren’t earning enough to live on.  My thesis is this:  ‘South Carolina food-service-industry tipped workers, rather than having tips make up most of their salaries, should receive tips in addition to the nontipped standard.’
