Blog Prompt #1

Due: 8/30/2018

Let’s use the first blog prompt to introduce yourself and get started on the narrative draft. First, introduce yourself. You can include your hometown, major, hobbies, something memorable about yourself, the areas of you expertise, your family, anything fun or interesting you have done, etc.

Then, explain the meal you have chosen to describe in your narrative and the dominant impression that you intend to communicate to your reader. Ultimately, you should share your preliminary thesis sentence. Unlike the rest of the blog posts that will be due before class, you will have until the end of class on Thursday to respond to this blog prompt, so if you have any trouble, we can work it out on Thursday.

    August 28, 2018 at 1:57 pm

Hello, my name is Brandon Hoover, and I’m from Gilbert, South Carolina. Gilbert is a small town about 15 minutes away from Lexington, South Carolina and 45 minutes away from Columbia, South Carolina. I am planning on majoring in communications but branching off in the aspects of sports communications. I hope to work for ESPN one as a sports content researcher or even go into sports reporting. I am the only child and my dad drives trucks for a local business and my mom works for the county of Lexington. I love to play baseball, I had the chance to play baseball at Lander but decided not to purse that, wasn’t really my thing anymore. I also love to do photography and to draw cartoon characters. I love to travel and hope to really purse this dream when I am older and hopefully have a lot more money. I really love food also so having this theme for this semester will be a lot of fun. The meal I plan to talk about is homemade Mac and Cheese. Not only is homemade Mac and Cheese delicious but making it with your own recipe and materials can make it more healthier, even more tasty.

  2. Kendra Lyndell Zavala
    August 28, 2018 at 4:50 pm

Hello,  my name is Kendra Zavala. I am from Laureldale, Pennsylvania. I chose USCA because I wanted to have the experience of living on my own and meeting new people. While at USCA I hope to obtain my bachelors degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. Not only can this degree open up many doors career wise; it can also allow me to become a radiology technician after my four years. In high school I played volleyball for 6 years and I was a long jumper and triple jumper on the track team. I would have to say that my biggest accomplishment was winning a state competition with my team for community service. This allowed us to compete in the SkillsUSA national competition which included all 50 states as well as territories such as Guam, Puerto Rico, Navajo, and the Virgin Islands. We placed fourth overall. There are many meals that I would like to talk about, but the one that sticks out to me would have to be feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving. Sure I might not be eating the food, but I helped serve the food and the drinks. I chose this meal because Thanksgiving is a holiday where you share what you are thankful for, and I was thankful for having that experience. Also, its probably the most memorable one because almost everything went wrong.

  3. Ma'lesha Dawson
    August 28, 2018 at 5:27 pm

Hello, my name is Ma’lesha Dawson. I am from Abbeville, South Carolina which is located about an hour and thirty minutes from Aiken, South Carolina. My hobbies consist of sleeping and more sleeping. I plan on majoring in nursing. Why nursing? My grandmother became blind in both eyes a little under 9 months ago. I stepped up to help my grandmother to feel as normal as possible and helped her in many ways. I chose nursing because I want to care for people as my mother cared for me and as I cared for my grandmother. A fun fact is I have a twin sister. You are wondering can I read her mind, well no but I wish I could. Math is my favorite subject, sorry Mr. Fornes. The meal I plan on writing about is thanksgiving dressing or stuffing. The fun is making dressing is as much fun as eating it. Adding your secret kick to dressing makes a very simple dish more interesting.

  4. T’Meira Brown
    August 28, 2018 at 5:32 pm

Hello, my name is T’Meira Brown and I am 16 almost 17 years of age. I’m from the small yet lovely city of Aiken, South Carolina. When I enroll full time in college my intended major will be either be in exercise science or public health, depending whether or not my college pick has those majors. I believe my interest in those majors stem from my mother’s various occupations. When my mother had my twin and I she was a medical assistant for a gastrointestinal doctor, then she moved on to work for a cardiologist which then lead her to be an assistant to an orthopedic surgeon. Her work in the medical field sparked my interest in it. In have an all-female household there are my three sisters, my mother, and myself. I am the youngest/middle child due to me being my mother’s second to last born. My sister is currently employed by the government since she’s in the National Guard and on her days off she works at Longhorn Steakhouse in Rockhill, South Carolina. My oldest sister is a stay-at-home mom and my twin is an intern at AECOM. I love to eat and sleep, so taking naps are the best part of my day. My other passion is the athletic training program at my school. The opportunity to join the program became available to me last year and that validated my mindset on the career that I wanted to pursue. I’ve tried most of the items on the menu at my job, and don’t remember most of it but the first time I ate at the place I was officially employed at really stuck with me. During orientation we were told to pick out an appetizer to try and I chose chili cheese fries so when it was served to me it signified that I was successful in obtaining my first job by myself.

  5. Mikayla Morales
    August 28, 2018 at 5:59 pm

Hello, my name is Mikayla Morales and I am from Lexington, South Carolina. I attended River Bluff High School. At River Bluff I was involved in many  ways. I ran cross country for four years and track for two, I was also involved in political and health clubs. I am a nursing major and eventually hope to become a nurse anesthetist. I chose USCA because of it’s nursing program. I have two older brothers, one of which attends USCA and is a senior in the nursing program. My hobbies still include running and working out when I can find the time. For my narrative, I chose to describe a typical family dinner. I want to include the small details and describe the different cultures and foods that I have been surrounded with since I was a child. I hope to make it as detailed as possible so the reader can really feel like they are a part of the dinner and learn about the many differences between my family. These large family dinners have been a big part of my life and I want to capture the details in the best way I can.

  6. Estefania Fuentes
    August 28, 2018 at 6:06 pm

Hello, my name is Estefania Fuentes, but I go by Stephanie. I am from Columbia, South Carolina. It is about an hour away from Aiken, South Carolina. I plan to major in Exercise and Sports Science to become a Therapist. My hobbies consist of playing the violin. I have been playing the violin for over 10 years now. I also have been playing volleyball for 8 years, but that ended 8 months ago, when I tore my ACL and meniscus. My family is from Oaxaca, Mexico. I have had the pleasure of visiting it and fell in love with the country and my parent’s town. The meal that I plan on talking about is eating homemade quesadillas because it tastes better than restaurant quesadillas, and it makes me think of my ethnicity, and where my family came from. It is also very memorable to me because this is the first meal I learned how to cook at a young age.

  7. Madalyn Shaver
    August 28, 2018 at 6:30 pm

Hi! My name is Madalyn. I am originally from North Augusta, South Carolina, however, I have lived in other places such as New York and Hawaii. Due to the military my mom, step-father, brothers, and I were constantly moving around. I graduated in 2018 from the Human Services Academy at Kapolei High School in Hawaii. My moms side of the family moved to Panama City Beach, where my step-father retired and I now live in North Augusta with my biological father and his family.  Although my family is split, fortunately, everyone gets along well, which makes things so much easier than typical split families. I enjoy anything to do with water — body boarding, kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming. The meal I have chosen is a specific meal I had recently at The Pizza Joint in downtown Augusta. It signified a whole new part of my life, it was the opening of a new door. That particular dinner allowed a person into my life that, although I wanted to be in my life, I never knew could be until then.

  8. Evan Condon
    August 28, 2018 at 6:34 pm

Hello, my name is Evan Condon. I am from Marietta, Georgia where I attended Walton High School. Here at Aiken, I am majoring in Exercise and Sports Science and playing baseball for the Aiken baseball team. One of my hobbies is playing baseball. I have been playing baseball since I was three years old with the dreams of playing college baseball and then possibly even taking it further following my college years. I am the youngest of four in my family with two older sisters and one older brother. Both of my sisters attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia while my brother went to Kennesaw State University.

In my narrative, I will be describing thanksgiving. I have chosen thanksgiving because this holiday is important to me because it allows my family to come together and give thanks to all of the many blessings that we have including family. I will be describing thanksgiving because just one short year ago my sister gave birth to a baby boy just before thanksgiving. It was such an amazing thing to be all together as a family again while we embraced our newest member. The celebration of new life and the giving of thanks made that holiday so special to me.

  9. Ashley Metts
    August 28, 2018 at 8:59 pm

Hi! My name is Ashley Metts. I am from North Augusta, South Carolina. I graduated from Strom Thurmond High School in June of this year. I played on the girls varsity soccer for three out of my four years and attended many Friday night football games. Go Rebels!  Here at USC Aiken I am majoring in nursing, although I am not sure what I want to do in the broad field of nursing. I currently work at Old McDonald’s Fish Camp located right off of Currytown in North Augusta, which is a family owned restaurant that is only open Thursday through Saturday. As of right now I am one of the restaurant’s bussers, but hope to soon move up to waitress. Outside of school and work I enjoy anything that relates to the outdoors, whether it be kayaking, bike riding, or even just laying in my Eno.

In my narrative, I will be discussing a previous experience that I have working in the restaurant industry. My sophomore year of high school I worked in Augusta, Georgia at a chain restaurant. It was New Years eve 2016, I had made previous plans to go to my friend’s house and celebrate the new year after I got off of work. Although half way through my shift that night I began to fall ill and was forced to stay at work after throwing up in the parking lot. Needless to say it was a very memorable New Years eve.

  10. Darrell Parker Lilly
    August 29, 2018 at 11:16 am

Hello, my name is Darrell Parker Lilly. I was born in  Columbia South Carolina and moved about four years later to where I live now, Edgefield South Carolina. My moms name is Teresa Lilly and my dads is Darrell Lilly. My major hobbies throughout my whole life have been sports and my main sport being Football. I have won two state titles and participated in several all star games and combines. I actually chose USCA over playing college football, crazy i know. I did this because i felt it was better to just to get my education in a small class environment.
My thesis statement is “I was about to experience on of the grossest things ever which could have been avoided if i just payed attention”. The meal i have chosen for my narrative paper  is a trip i took to the mountains where i had a very interesting and gross dining experience at Steak and Shake. I try to communicate my crazy experience and to just say you should always pay attention to the meal you are eating because you never know what you could be putting in your mouth.

  11. Candace Crowder
    August 29, 2018 at 12:13 pm

Hello, my name is Candace Crowder. I am originally from Augusta, Georgia. I moved to Graniteville, South Carolina 4 years ago at the start of my freshman year of High School. My major I am taking on is Biology. I am planning on being a Dental Hygienist in the future. My hobbies mainly include playing softball and going to school. I recently have also started going to the gym to work out so that is one of my new hobbies. My favorite subjects are mainly math and science. English is my least favorite because its a lot of reading and writing. I think the most interesting thing I’ve done was go to Cancun, Mexico. The craziest thing about that vacation was that I rode a jet-ski there and it broke down in the middle of the ocean and I was freaking out because I thought a shark was going to jump out the water and eat me.

In my narrative I will be talking about how I learned how to make a meal by my great-grandmother. The main course of the meal she taught me is a German dish called schnitzel. She also taught me how to make her potato salad. This meals is one of my favorite meals ever. Throughout my narrative I will talk about how to make it and how tough it was to learn it from a my German grandmother that yells and cusses at you if you do one little thing wrong.

  12. Ithzel Contreras
    August 29, 2018 at 2:41 pm

Hello, my name is Ithzel Contreras. I am from Eagle Pass, Texas. Eagle Pass is a small town, that is connected to Piedras Negras, Coahuila (Mexico). I decided to come to USCA because it is small school and I wanted to have the experience of living on my own and meeting new people. I’m planning on getting a bachelor’s degree in Finance and going to graduate school to pursue a career in law. My hobbies consist of playing soccer, and basketball. I played basketball for 10 years, until I didn’t wanted to do it anymore because it felt forced. I have been playing soccer for 6 years, but this ended after I graduated from high school. I was offer a scholarship to play soccer in Mexico, City but I rejected it because I didn’t wanted to play in college.
In my narrative, I will be describing my Christmas dinner. I have chosen Christmas because this is the holiday where all my family gets together, and talks about their lives. I will be describing Christmas because this is one of my favorite times of the year. I will describe how Mexican Christmas dinners are in my grandma’s house. My thesis statement is “Christmas is not about the gifts you get but the people you spend it with”.

  13. Adeline Folland
    August 29, 2018 at 3:38 pm

Hey! My name is Adeline Folland but my friends call me Addie! I am from North Augusta, South Carolina. I have many hobbies including reading, writing, and organizing. Yeah, I sound like a total nerd but I love English. Speaking of English that’s what I am at USC Aiken for! I am majoring in education to become a secondary English teacher.  I have followed this passion from my previous English teacher, Mrs. Leopard. I never fully realized my love for English (nor teaching) until I had her class. My mother is Beth, she has her own art business and her husband is a truck driver.

In my narrative, I have decided to vividly describe my service at Waffle House on prom night. In the past, I have helped my sister clear tables and do refills. Most of you know the booths hold four people, two on each side. Well, there was one particular booth… of seven. Yes,  I said seven. I know what you’re all thinking how in the Hell did seven people fit into one booth?

You’ll have to find that out once I finish my paper.

  14. Chloe Corley
    August 29, 2018 at 4:10 pm

Hello, my name is Chloe Corley, and I’m from the busy town of Lexington in South Carolina. Living in Lexington isn’t all that great. Especially on a Friday when everybody decides to take the day off and run all their errands. Talk about bad traffic. I grew up in West Columbia, which is only twenty-five minutes from Lexington. It was me, my brother, my dad, and my mom living in West Columbia until my parents divorced, and that’s when I moved to Lexington with my mom. My brother and I are seven years apart which makes him twenty-five now. My mom is remarried, and my dad just proposed to his girlfriend and will be getting married next summer! My brother is a firefighter for Cayce, my mom is the secretary for traffic engineering at the City of Columbia, and my dad works at SCDOT. Some hobbies of mine include hunting, fishing, hanging out with my friends, working out, and watching Netflix. I used to be a huge basketball player, but I decided in the beginning of my senior year of playing that college was for education and that I would not be accepting any offers that I had already received and would receive. I plan on majoring in Biology, but that will most likely change. I would like to take that biology major and become a physical therapist. I’m super excited that this semester is based on food because believe me, food is very important to me. In my narrative, I have decided to describe my brother and I’s lunch date to Apple Bee’s and his pleasant surprise in his delicious salad.

  15. Jada Lee
    August 29, 2018 at 5:00 pm

Hello, my name is Jada Lee. I am an 18-year-old only child in a single parent household. I am from Orangeburg, SC which is roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes away from Aiken. Just like every single adult female in my close family, I am pursuing a nursing degree. However, my decision to major in nursing had nothing to do with following in the footsteps of my relatives and everything to do with supporting my hobby of horseback riding. I have been consistently riding for more than 11 years, and I have tried just about every English discipline out there. Both my mom, a Registered Nurse, and my grandma, a Licensed Practical Nurse, previously rode horses but stopped shortly after my riding career started.

In my narrative, I have decided to recollect on a dinner that involves my mom, my grandma, and myself. What started out as a (somewhat) enjoyable evening at my grandma’s favorite seafood restaurant quickly turned into a screaming match that ended with one of the most awkward 45-minute car rides of my life. However, just when I thought the relationship between us was permanently damaged, a moment of self-reflection brought us even closer than before and taught us just how powerful forgiveness could be.

  16. Eric Houser
    August 29, 2018 at 5:41 pm

Hello, my name is Eric Houser and I am from Downingtown, PA, but I currently reside in Hephzibah, GA with my wife Amberle. I am a communication major, but my expertise is in computer networks as I’ve spent the past 5 years working with some of that information in the U.S. Army. I also currently run a football podcast called ‘The House Rules of Football’, the next part should be coming out sometime this weekend.

The meal I chose for my narrative is Potato Stuffing. If you are wondering what it is, its mashed potatoes with pieces of sausage and bell’s seasoning. It’s something that my wife will make only a couple times a year because the bell’s seasoning has to be sent down here from her family. On the rare occasions that I do get to eat potato stuffing, it not only fills me with immense joy, but also reminds of how much I’m glad to have my wife.

  17. Bo Faile
    August 29, 2018 at 6:17 pm

Hey, my name is Bo Faile and I am from Norway, South Carolina. Norway is a little town in Orangeburg county, about 45 minutes from Aiken. I am currently majoring in Biology and I want to branch into Environmental Remedation and Restoration. I love playing baseball and soccer and I have played baseball for 15 years now. I have a brother and sister, and my dad works for a grocery store as a manager and my mom works small part time jobs occasionally. I have been out of the country twice, once on a cruise to the Bahamas and once to Canada when I was very young. The meal I will be talking about is a Native American-style buffalo burger on fry bread and why it is definitely the best thing that I have ever eaten.

  18. Coral Crittenden
    August 29, 2018 at 6:48 pm

Hey there! The name’s Coral. I’m from North Augusta, the small city in South Carolina that only gets visitors twice a year. For The Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, and for the Nike Peach Jam at our “Rec”. I’m going to college for Secondary Education, and I’m planning on teaching English to High Schoolers. I love to listen to music, in fact I can’t focus without it, because “silence is deafening,”. When not doing schoolwork, you can find me perusing gaming videos on Youtube, watching anime, or enjoying a movie! I don’t get out often and I’m totally a recluse, but I enjoy the life I’m living.
As everyone knows, the meals on cruises are practically buffets. Order what you want, as much as you want, and you can have it! Well on my household’s last evening of our 5 day voyage, the mother of the family who we shared our table with, claimed that I couldn’t eat all the items I had ordered for dinner that night. I replied that I could and would, so she took me up on the challenge. If I could eat everything I ordered, she would reward me in some way. Despite the overwhelming pressure of having to completely eat 6 different items despite how small I was, I didn’t back down from my claim, and I wasn’t going to let someone tell me what I could, and couldn’t do.

  19. Madison C. Ayers
    August 29, 2018 at 9:20 pm

Hey! My name is Madison Ayers, but a lot of people call me MAC because I have grown up with other Madison’s in the class and that is my initials when monogrammed. I was born in Augusta, Georgia but before I turned 1 I moved to Gibsonville, North Carolina which is a small town in Greensboro, North Carolina. When I was 9 I moved back here to North Augusta, South Carolina. My dad (Brian) is a preacher, my mom (Jane) is a 1st grade teacher at Belvedere Elementary, and my sister (Rachel) is a special education at North Augusta Elementary School. I am the 1st girl on my moms’ side for many generations to not go into Education. I am double majoring in psychology and sociology. I plan on being a Child Life Specialist. A Child Life Specialist is a person who helps the kids adapt to their treatment plans and to also help the parents. I used to play soccer before I broke my knee and was told I could never play soccer again, but now I enjoy going on walks and any outdoor activities with my boyfriend and his family.
In my narrative I will be talking about Thanksgiving on my dads’ side. We all come together, and everyone has a part in making the meal.

  20. Annalee McDaniel
    August 29, 2018 at 10:14 pm

Hello, my name is Annalee Rose McDaniel; and not it’s not McDonalds or McDaniels even though people try to convince me it is. Anyway, I’m from a small little town called Warrenville and if you drive to fast you might drive right through it. I grow up in a little neighborhood that was mainly made up of my family members and if they weren’t family by blood they were family at heart. Being surrounded by family most of my life is what influenced my choice of majoring in Nursing. Also being around my grandparents, mostly my grandmothers really helped me realize that I love baking. I can bake pretty much anything from scratch at this point. My favorite thing to bake is a homemade red velvet cake. I’d say its one of my special talents that and I can sing a little. Another interesting fact about me is that I have been working at Chick-Fil-A for the past year and I once was the cow.
In my narrative I will discuss more about this experience and working in the restaurant industry. I want to tell about the positive things I have gotten out of working in a restaurant. Even though working in a restaurant can be stressful at times, without working at Chick-Fil-a I would not have become more interactive when it comes to working with others or have opened up more; due to this it has prepared me for my future career.

  21. Jasna Gerou
    August 29, 2018 at 10:39 pm

Hello, my name is Jasna Gerou and I’m from a small town in south eastern Wisconsin. Nearly every person I’ve met in South Carolina has asked why Aiken, why South Carolina, or why the big change. Though, the warm weather and no snow is a plus, it’s also an opportunity. I feel as I can grow and learn things on my own the “hard way”. Yet another reason I chose South Carolina. I can discipline myself the way I never did in high school. I’m majoring in business with a focus on accounting which I think is a degree that takes a lot of self discipline, time and focus; something I didn’t have the mindset for in high school. I also graduated from a school that’s almost as big as USCA making the change a bit easier. I wasn’t a person who enjoyed being “involved” in school but I absolutely loved playing on the soccer team and playing volleyball. Luckily, I always had friends and family to spice up my life, even when it wasn’t needed. For years my family and friends called me a Grinch and I would have to agree; though, there is one thing I enjoy about the holiday’s, especially Christmas.

Growing up in a Serbian family we do things a bit differently. We have Christmas on January 7th, and the whole family gets together for a big dinner. After dinner we usually play games, open presents, and play a “bread game”. “The bread game” is my favorite part about Christmas, even if someone isn’t having fun, a kid is crying, or my brothers too drunk, it brings the whole family together in one of the most meaningful ways I know.

  22. Destiny Williams
    August 29, 2018 at 10:43 pm

GOOOOD MOOORNING USCA!  (well actually night). My name is Destiny Williams. I am from the small town Barnwell, just 45 minutes away from Aiken. I have a younger brother and an older sister who has blessed me with two nephews and a niece. I graduated with 111 other people from Barnwell High School. In high school, something that I took pride in was JROTC. I was involved with it for all four years of high school and worked my way up to second in command. I am currently studying psychology with a focus in criminal justice because I want to someday become a criminal profiler. College and work keeps me busy, but in my free time I like to write, draw, play my guitar or ukulele, or do anything else art related. I don’t exactly have a field of expertise, but I do know a little bit about some of everything. Something interesting that I have done is competed at a national competition in music production because my team won first place at state level.

In my narrative, I would like to talk about my experiences working in a local restaurant in my hometown. Something that I began doing just to make money over the summer turned into some moments that I will never forget including the good, the bad, and the undefinable.

  23. Brenda Martinez
    August 29, 2018 at 10:51 pm

Hi! My name is Brenda Martinez, and I grew up in the town of Graniteville for most of my life. I am hoping to get into the competitive nursing program to one day be able to provide care for adults, children and elders. My biggest passion is making people share a smile and sometimes I’ll crack a few jokes for some laughs. One of my most memorable moments would be when I was in kindergarten I used to sit next to my chickens and pigeons and read to them many books. This was how I taught myself to read English and build a connection with animals. One of my areas of expertise would be all hispanic food ever made. Since I grew up in an authentic hispanic family where we eat just about any of our meals with tortillas, tacos, or homemade enchiladas, I have grown accustomed to all the different flavors and spices. About a year ago, I decided to go vegan after watching a few documentaries and truths about the meat industry that left me devastated about the foods I was consuming daily. I actually lasted a year and a half before I broke the vegan diet with a chick-fil-a spicy deluxe sandwich.

I used to be a waitress for Mi Ranchos in Aiken, so I have some experience with the way the foods are prepared and served. The meal I have chosen to write in my narrative essay is one I would recommend which was the cheese steak burrito that if you wanted some extra spiciness you could add some of the house red sauce. The cheese steak burrito is by far one of the best meals on the menu and best seller, it’s a classic, but not for two of the young gentlemen I served it to one friday night. A delicious meal is delicious until it turns the night around or simply Gordon Ramsey says otherwise.

  24. Marcus Edgington
    August 29, 2018 at 10:55 pm

Hello, my name is Marcus Edgington and I am originally from Colorado but moved to South Carolina, more specifically Aiken, around 10 years ago. Do not get me wrong I love Colorado but the south is my home. Since I am still in high school I really have not picked out a major or anything I would want to pursue in college. My family consists of my mom, dad, one oldest brother and one older sister. They are skilled people being that my dad is a cost engineer for Savannah River Site and my mom works for the University. My brother is in the military and was recently deployed in July and will not be back until Christmas Eve and my sister is a PA and works tiresome days and nights, but she loves it. I love to travel, I am wanting to go overseas to places such as Spain and Italy since I have seen all the states in the US, including Hawaii.

  25. Za'Leayia Robinson
    August 29, 2018 at 11:10 pm

Hey, my name is Za’Leayia Robinson. I am from Darlington, SC a very small town that is known for our racetrack. I am majoring in Business Management with the focus in Accounting. My hobbies are eating, sleeping, playing soccer, and listening to music. Something memorable about me is that I have a really great memory when is comes down to learning music. I am very great at reading music, teaching music, and playing instruments. My family is that big. Its just me, my sister Layia, my brother Qaleki, and my mother Sharon. Something fun that I have done is that I went parasailing with my bestfriend and her mom. It was very fun and exciting and I had a really great experience.

The meal that I have chosen to talk about for my narrative is the meal that my family put together for me and my sister for a birthday/ my going away dinner.

    August 29, 2018 at 11:24 pm

Hello! My name is Shamerius Mack. I am from North, SC about forty-five minutes away from Aiken. I’ve been over the entire south due to my dad’s tenure in the military. The journey came to an end when he retired in Graniteville earlier this year. However, I do plan on resuming my journey as I plan on obtaining my MBA from the University of Southern California. As of right now I enjoy working, listening to music, and living life.

In my narrative I will be discussing my Senior Trip 2018 to the Bahamas where me and my former classmates enjoyed a memorable dinner.

  28. Austin Herndon
    August 29, 2018 at 11:33 pm

Hello, my name is Austin Herndon. I’m from Graniteville, SC which is about a 10 to 15 minute drive from USCA, so luckily I’m not too far from home. I’m currently majoring in computer engineering. For all of my life, ever since I received my first Gameboy for Christmas, I’ve been very interested in video games and technology. What I first wanted to be while I was growing up was a game designer, but as I grew up I began learning of many different types of careers I could aim for and when I heard about computer engineering it really caught my attention. Not only was I a huge fan of games but I was also great with computers, better than anyone else in my family. At the time I was also becoming very great at math and science which were essential skills that played a major part about being an engineer. So after middle school, that was the career I began to work towards, and that’s why I’m currently here at USCA.

For my narrative, I will talk about a terrible dining experience I had at a Japanese restaurant that I honestly can’t remember the name of. Occasionally everyone deals with bad service or unsatisfying food, but with this restaurant, sh*t really hit the fan in several aspects. Coincidentally this can relate to what Forked is all about so I can’t wait to share my essay on it.

  29. Arionna Singleton
    August 30, 2018 at 12:07 am

Hello, my name is Arionna Singleton. I’m from Orangeburg, South Carolina which is about an hour and fifteen to thirty minutes away from Aiken which is quite a drive. Biology is my major and I have always wanted to be a Pediatrician since I was six years old. My hobbies consist of singing, dancing, spending time with my family, listening to music, and getting my hair done. I am the oldest out of five and I must say I am the spoiled child. I am very passionate in everything I do and I love to meet new people and try new things. I really haven’t done that many interesting things in my life but just being able to be alive is more than enough for me. Being a student at USCA seems like the best choice I have made so far at this point.

For my narrative, I will talk about my stepdad’s Jamaican restaurant that seemed quite good for my first time eating there. The food service is amazing and his business is expanding every week.

    August 30, 2018 at 9:15 am

Hello, my name is Taylor Brown. I live in North Augusta, South Carolina. My major is Nursing, while I plan to be a specialist in Neonatal nursing. I also plan to minor in languages because I have a passion of learning languages. I can at the moment speak three languages. My favorite color is pink and I’m always wear it in some type of way. I also have a deep passion for Marching Band and Cheer-leading. In my free time I like to swim and spend time with family and friends. In my narrative I plan to describe my experience at the Honeycomb Cafe on the USC campus. It was mid- July and I was at Summer Seniors where I met this group of mean, and disrespectful lunch ladies. This is where I want to make my paper revolve around.

  31. Gabrielle Hayes
    August 30, 2018 at 9:19 am

Hi, my name is Gabrielle, but I’ve always gone by Gabbi. I was born in Augusta, GA, but my hometown is Aiken, SC. Even though I lived in Aiken for the majority of my life, I also lived in Tennessee, Florida, and a few other states. I’ve also been to every state, except for Hawaii and Alaska, because my dad used to drive trucks for a living. I am the youngest and only girl of 3 kids; one on my dad’s side and one on my mom’s side. One of my brothers’ is currently in the marines and is stationed in California. My other brother lives in Florida and he works at T-Mobile. My mom works at Millbrook Elementary and she’s a Special Ed Aid. My dad is a disabled veteran, so he doesn’t work anymore.

At the moment, I have not decided on a major here at USCA, but I’m leading towards Pre-law and I’m also taking classes that are similar to that subject. I would like to go into the criminal justice area. I watch a lot of Crminal Minds and Law and Order, so that kind of influenced my decision. I enjoy singing, and I believe I’m kind of good at it. I was in the chorus all four years of high school and 8th grade.

The meal that i chose to write about is the chicken finger plate that I had at Ruby Tuesday.

  32. Anna Bevington
    August 30, 2018 at 9:47 am

My name is Anna Bevington. I am a student at USCA and Midland Valley High School because I am dual-enrolling here. I am from Graniteville, SC and have lived there my whole life. I plan on attending either Anderson University or Clemson University after I graduate high school. I am not the athletic type, but I do enjoy working on the side lines for my Sports Medicine class. I am also infatuated with travel and culture and the world around us. I have plans to travel all over and I’m not wasting time, an I traveled to Scotland and Ireland in June and I am planning on going to Greece, Italy, and Rome in two years. I would also love to study abroad for a semester.

I decided to write my narrative on a meal I had a few weeks ago at the iHop in North Augusta. Though the food itself was nothing special, it was the experience I had there that made it memorable. We had just had a last-minute worship service at our church, so mostly only the core members came, but we all went to iHop afterwards and it ended up being about 40 of us, old and young. There was just so much love and light-hearted conversation and the terrible service just made for an opportunity to fellowship and enjoy our time together before some of them went off to college.

  33. Andrea
    August 30, 2018 at 9:55 am

Hello, my name is Andrea Blackwood and I am 17 years old. I attended Fox Creek High School and cheered there for 3 years. My sophmore year I was the only JV cheerleader from our school selected to be an FCA all-american cheerleader.  I was born in Augusta, Georgia but I’ve been raised in North Augusta majority of my life. I don’t live on campus but I’m planning on moving here eventually so that I can meet new people here at USCA. I have a total of 7 siblings but I live with my mom and one of my younger sisters.  My hobbies include watching movies, sleeping, and shopping. My mom is a nurse so that kind of inspired me to lean towards that field as my major here at USCA. The meal that I will be discussing in my narrative is from the restaurant MargaritaVille in Myrtle beach. My experience there was great as far as the display and customer service it was the food wasn’t acceptable at all.

  34. Austin Williams
    August 30, 2018 at 10:40 am

My name is Austin Williams, I am from Trenton, South Carolina. My parents own a restaurant called Airport Grill on Bettis Academy Road. My family and I go on many of carnival cruises every year. My favorite hobby is to play video games, mostly Fortnite. I come from a big family, I have two brothers and one sister. My summer time job is working at a peach stand in the hot summer. I plan to study chemistry here at USCA and then in a couple of years transfer to USC-Columbia and do chemical engineering. I went to Fox Creek High School from 9th-12th grade and picked USCA as my first choice college. In high school, I played baseball and basketball. I played baseball from 9th-10th grade and basketball from 10th-11th grade. I moved out of my house at the end of my senior year and live with my girlfriend and pay most of my bills. (light bill, water bill, wifi, etc.) I also have a little black and white chihuahua that is only ten weeks old, I got him from my girlfriend as a graduation gift. I plan to have a great year here at USCA and grow up to be someone in life because in the past my mom’s siblings were gonna be someone in their life… that’s what they thought.
In my narrative, I will be talking about a meal I had on Thanksgiving at my grandma’s house and our entire family had come with my mom’s siblings families and… well, you’ll find out.

  35. Tyler Gallman
    August 30, 2018 at 10:40 am

Hello, my name is Tyler Gallman. I grew up in a town about 50 miles south of Greenville called Greenwood. Although I have lived there my whole life, I’ve enjoyed traveling. Just this summer I took a trip to Alaska. I love photography so of course this specific trip to beautiful Alaska was well documented! Along with photography, I have always been fascinated with the building/planning behind bridges, dams, structures, ect.. Saying this, my current career goal is to be a civil engineer in some relatively good sized city. I am currently a freshmen here at USC Aiken but plan to transfer to USC Columbia to finish out my civil engineering degree.

Through thinking of a topic for my narrative paper I came across this one idea where I could get across my love for burgers and exploration of different foods/combinations of foods. For my narrative paper I am going to share my experience as I settled my curiosity in a burger from The Boston Burger Company in Boston Massachusetts.

  36. Sydney Burk
    August 30, 2018 at 12:14 pm

    Sydney Burk

    Blog Prompt 1

    English 101

My name is Sydney Burk and I am from Jamestown, New York, a very cold different place than South Carolina. I am a transfer student from St. Bonaventure University located in Olean, New York. I participated in softball and basketball at my old university and transferred to USCA to further continue my academic and athletic career. I am majoring in marketing and finance and have a very positive outlook on my future with these two majors. My plans after college are uncertain, like most college students, but I see myself starting out in a sales position. My hobbies include any sort of sport, exercising, and drawing. I grew up participating in every sport imaginable; soccer, skiing, softball, basketball, volleyball, swimming, etc. My mother is an art teacher at a local high school and had a major impact on me when it comes to art. When professors ask to name something memorable about me it is hard to think of a specific detail that would make me stand out from others. So, if I were trying to pick something unique about myself for a professor to remember me by something memorable would be that I am from New York and I am on the softball team. A specific uniqueness about me is that I have extremely small hands for a college softball player. As a pitcher, I am unable to throw specific pitches because of the size of my hands. Yes, it made me a hard worker to “overcome” my small hands on the field, but I now find it funny and an interesting part of me.

Thesis statement: Often we forget what we have in life and want more. We need to begin to embrace the blessings life has brought us and be thankful for what and who we have without feeling fulfilled.

  37. Carson Weeks
    August 30, 2018 at 12:21 pm

Hey my name is Carson Weeks and I’m from North Augusta, South Carolina and I attended North Augusta High.  I wanted to go to USCA because it is cheaper than a big college and it i s not too far from where I live.  My major is Biology because I have always had a love for science.  My hobbies include things like playing guitar  and listening to music.  My dad has been playing guitar since he was young and has always been an inspiration.  I am also a really big car enthusiast and I can pretty much tell you about anything car related.  I own and 1979 Chevy Corvette and it is my pride and joy.  It’s pretty old so it has been teaching me how to fix things and work on cars in general.

  41. Ryan Arnott
    August 30, 2018 at 2:53 pm

My name is Ryan Arnott, I am from Columbia, South Carolina. I don’t have a major yet but I’m thinking about Majoring in a science. I enjoy reading fantasy and sci fi books, watching netflix and youtube. I am slightly allergic to most foods because most processed foods have corn product or egg in them. I have an older brother and my dad who live back in Columbia. A few years ago, when my family took a vacation up to New Hampshire to visit my dad’s parents, my dad took my brother and I on a hiking trip up one of the tallest mountain in the state, Mt. Monadnock. My brother and I didn’t want to be there so we took the hardest trail that was also the shortest, it was a very steep climb with lots of climbing vertically over rock faces and boulders. On the way down I slid down a boulder that was at an angle, because I  wanted to get down the mountain, and I slid too fast and had too much momentum and tripped at the bottom and rolled head over heels for about 20-30 ft down and slammed into a tree. I only had a few bruises and could have broken a lot of bones or died. I’m choosing to write about the first Thanksgiving that I cooked, I’m going to focus on the food that I helped the most with. It was the first holiday I cooked for and it introduced my love of cooking and how much fun it could be.

    August 30, 2018 at 9:03 pm

Hi! My name is Mikaela Alday, but you can call me Mika. I am originally from Manila, Philippines, but me and my family moved here in Aiken five years ago. I graduated from Midland Valley High School, and I’m majoring in nursing here in USC-Aiken. I plan to be a registered nurse and practice after graduation, then I will pursue my Master’s degree to become a nurse practitioner. My hobbies are paddle boarding, swimming, and playing badminton. I enjoy doing outdoor activities rather than staying inside under a roof. The most memorable experience that I had was when I went to Jekyll Island with my family and some friends to celebrate my 18th birthday. In my narrative, I’m going to talk about our dinner at a restaurant in the hotel we were staying at. The restaurant, The Reserve, had an inviting ambiance with their slightly dimmed lights, friendly servers, and the steak’s savory aroma dancing in the air.

  46. Kinley Johnson
    August 30, 2018 at 9:23 pm

Hey! My name is Kinley Johnson. I am originally from Augusta, Georgia but I moved to Graniteville, South Carolina with my mom when I was six years old due to my parents’ divorce. I attended Midland Valley High School where I graduated a year early. I chose USCA because it is close to home and my mother wouldn’t let me attend Southern Wesleyan University. I will be majoring in elementary education. I have aspired to become a teacher ever since I was four years old.  I have three siblings: one older sister, a younger brother, and a younger sister. I enjoy doing pageants and hanging out with my best friend. I am a part of the youth group and drama team at my church. I am also on the cheer team at USCA.

In my narrative I will be discussing a family dinner I had with my dad at a restaurant in Augusta when I was 11 years old. During this experience, my father was kicked out and banned from this restaurant for his behavior.

  47. Caleb Fairchild
    August 30, 2018 at 9:34 pm

Hello, my name is Caleb Fairchild. I’ve moved around quite a bit in my life. I was originally born in Maryland. I then moved to Arkansas, South Carolina, Indiana, then, more recently, back to South Carolina. One of the hobbies is drama. I’ve been in drama at nearly every school that I’ve attended and it provides a nice space to just have fun and enjoy yourself. Some things memorable about me are that I’ve moved around a lot, my grandparents were second cousins, and I’m still in high school (I’m doing dual-enrollment at South Aiken). One of my favorite things to do in my free time is to hang out with friends.  Drama and random facts about Astronomy could be considered my area of expertise. The meal that I have chosen to write about is a meal that I had at a small diner-style restaurant in the middle of nowhere with one of my closest friends. The dominant impression that I intend to communicate is the how walking into the diner made felt like getting away from the rest of the world. I want to express how the restaurant, its decor, and the food gave off a vibe that allowed me to feel as though time had stopped all my worries could melt away.

  48. Carson Cockrell
    August 30, 2018 at 10:19 pm

Hello, my name is carson Cockrell I am 18 years old and I am from Edgefield, South Carolina.  I played baseball for North Augusta high for 5 years until my senior year when I sustained a shoulder injury.  Nowadays I shoot on the shotgun team for usca.  I have always hunted and shot my whole life, but it wasn’t until I didn’t have baseball anymore that I realized that I enjoyed competition shooting.  Though it was my first year it payed off since I placed 1st overall senior and won a 2,000-dollar scholarship.  So basically, that and school is the only thing I must do these days.  Along with hanging out with my best friend almost every day in-between classes.
I was working my shift one day two summers ago when I truly realized that people take their anger and aggression out on service workers.  One of my theories on why people do this is because the wide spread idea that “the customer is always right” so they believe that they can be rude to them without any repercussions.  This young lady was waiting on her order when apparently her boyfriend broke up with her.  She became frustrated at her boyfriend and threw the Snoball she had ordered back into the window of the store, which proceeded to hit me directly in the chest getting syrup and ice all over me.  Truly a pleasant experience.

  51. Keezee Florentville
    August 30, 2018 at 10:48 pm

I am Keezee Florentville, hailed from a small island in the Caribbean called St. Lucia, whose current population is about 180,000 people. The traditional family and religion norms most may know has never applied to me. My parents reared Ten children with me being the seventh child from the assortment of five boys and five girls. Growing up we were all raised as Rastafarians, this highlighting another one of my distinctive qualities, as such; I am vegan. In general few people you meet are born vegan, and those who choose to become vegan usually do so following a personal epiphany, perhaps in the wake of a health crisis, or after meeting and befriending a farm animal whom one might formerly have considered food. Luckily for me I was born a vegan and didn’t have to go through any encounters or health crisis. The Irony of the situation is that I don’t even like animals and never have I seen one slaughtered. Often, people marvel at the fact that I have never consumed any type of meat from animals or animal bi-products.
At an early age I possessed a drive for reading and this made me stand out amongst my siblings. Being the seventh child in a family of ten, life was always fast paced and rambunctious. Nevertheless, I refused to engage in their play time activities and preferred to stay indoors to complete the Hardy Boys Mystery Series. Coupled with reading, I enjoy playing netball; a Caribbean sport designed for girls and other practices like honing my culinary skills within my native Caribbean cuisine. Community outreach association memberships has always been another memorable area in my life by which I positively impacted the lives of others. I travelled all the way from the Caribbean because I was offered an academic scholarship to pursue my dream of becoming a Financial Analyst; as such, my major is Finance. This places tremendous significance as a key stone in my lifeline because I am amongst the first in my family to pursue a college education beyond the boundaries of my home country.

  52. Ethan Schultz

My name is Ethan Schultz and I am from Lexington, SC. I’m majoring in Business Finance. My mom’s name is Cindy and my dad’s name is Jerry. I have hobbies such as playing ultimate frisbee, going to the gym, and hanging out with my boys.

I decided to write my narrative on a bad experience at Ruby Tuesday’s. I was served a “hair”burger with a side of curly fries. When I say curly fries, I mean fries with curly hair in them. The instant I noticed the hairs in my food, I began to feel sick and started throwing up in the middle of the restaurant. The worst part about it? I was on a date. By the end of the night I knew I had messed up any possibility of a future relationship with that person, but it definitely made for a good story to tell.

  55. Virginia Quarles
    October 9, 2018 at 10:11 am

My name is Virginia Quarles and I am from Charleston, South Carolina. My current major is Nursing. My hobbies include spending time with friends and family, baking, and playing the piano. In my free time, I go to the barn and ride horses. When deciding what to write for my narrative, I knew to avoid any sort of cliché story. This process took me a couple of days to finally decide on a specific topic. After reminiscing with my mom, I felt that I was able to embrace my memorable dinner narrative. A lot of events led up to the dinner. Therefore, it may be difficult for me to focus on the main point of the narrative and not get sidetracked.

Thesis: During a relaxing night at Weber Grill in Chicago, my mom and I ate dinner and watched a group of girls pile into a party van with inflatable, fake boyfriends. Not only was eating out in Chicago memorable to me but the fake boyfriends were unexpected.

  56. James Jackson
    October 15, 2018 at 10:12 pm

I’m James Jackson, a nineteen-year-old. I just so happen to be a Freshmen from a small town In South Carolina known as Darlington. My favorite color Is olive green and I love to eat fried chicken and talk to people; I can talk to anyone about just about anything for however long. My major was nursing, but I’ve recently changed It Business Administration with a Marketing concentration and one day I hope to be a successful marketing manager. A thing that sticks about me Is that I’m very different from most guys my height; I’m not that serious, I’m a little goofier than most people my age and I do not mind that. In my narrative I choose to talk about the time I went to Jamaica and Mexico on a Carnival Cruise and the food was the best I’ve ever had in my nineteen years of life. My thesis statement is I’ve had the most extravagantly delicious meal of my life. This event of taste took place on a cruise to Mexico, and then Jamaica.  The meal was nothing short of amazing. It was also accompanied by a timelessly beautiful environment that would leave Gordon Ramsey in awe.
